Leeds undone by late goal
Jan Venneggor of Hesselink, in blue, is PSV's top scorer this season

Leeds 0-1 PSV Eindhoven (agg 0-1)

A last-minute goal by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink knocked Leeds out of the Uefa Cup and gave Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven victory in their second leg, fourth round tie.

Vennegoor of Hesselink dived bravely into the goalmouth to head in after the ball had bounced back off the crossbar from a Theo Lucius effort.

Leeds paid the price for not taking their chances, especially in the first half and plunged their season into more disarray.

Leeds have not won in nine games during which time their Champions League qualification hopes have faded, they have been knocked out of the FA Cup and they are now out of the Uefa Cup.

  Key incidents
11 mins: Keeper Lodewijks saves well from Viduka
23: Kewell blasts a glorious chance high
60: A fantastic Martyn save denies Kezman
89: Vennegoor of Hesselink strikes a late winner

PSV put on an impressive and dominant second-half show which was rewarded by the late winner as the game looked to be heading into extra-time.

But to begin with. Leeds had the greater purpose, although both sides had clear attacking intentions which made for an entertaining encounter.

A Leeds counter-attack after 11 minutes saw Kevin Hofland lose the ball in the midfield before Bowyer played in Viduka whose angled effort went out of play off the goalkeeper.

Kewell and his Australian colleague Mark Viduka then played a quick one-two only for the former to curl a shot wide.

At a rain-lashed Elland Road, Kewell should have scored after 23 minutes.

A mistake in the PSV defence released Viduka on the Leeds right before his cut-back found its way to Kewell.

But, unmarked and with a plenty of the goal to aim for, he blasted high.

The visitors almost made Leeds pay for their profligacy when Andre Ooijer headed Mark Van Bommel's cross just over the angle of keeper Nigel Martyn's goal.

Lucius had a shot deflected just wide before an alert Patrick Lodewijks in the PSV goal blocked an Alan Smith shot at close quarters.

Matteo, Bowyer were denied shortly after the interval but PSV found their fluency and began to signal an increasing threat.

And it was only the agility of keeper Martyn which kept matters level as he dived full stretch to his right to palm away a well-struck Mateji Kezman shot.

Ferdinand was the Leeds saviour minutes later when his last-ditch lunge blocked a Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink close range shot.

Vennegoor of Hesselink then put an excellent chance wide before scoring the all-important late goal.

Lucius struck the crossbar and PSV's top scorer this season, Vennegoor of Hesselink, dived to head in the rebound.
