Leeds and PSV Eindhoven had numerous chances to seize the initiative in their Uefa Cup tie, but neither team was able to do so.

Nigel Martyn made several superb saves in an action-packed first half, while David O'Leary's team had two headers cleared off the line.

The second half were more circumspect but Leeds had the better opportunities and will be disappointed they do not lead going into the second-leg at Elland Road.

Both teams looked comfortable on the ball and passed with style and purpose.

  Key moments
5 mins: Martyn superb saves from Rommedahl
22 mins: Ooijer clears off the line for PSV
23 mins: Vennegoor clears off the line for PSV
27 mins: Matteo appears to handle the ball but the referee waves play on
But Eindhoven - with a superb record at home - were too defensive and lacked ambition - only Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl caught the eye.

Mark van Bommel and Kevin Hofland - both linked with high-profile transfers to the Premier League - were far from impressive

But the most disappointing performance was that of referee Stefano Braschi.

Mark van Bommel in particular should have been booked on several occasions as Breschi's lenient approach hindered more than it helped the game flow.

Leeds created the first chance of the match in the opening minute but Lee Bowyer - surrounded by two PSV defenders - could not quite latch-on to Mark Viduka's cross.

Spurned chances

PSV soon hit back and twice forced good saves from Nigel Martyn.

Van Bommel shot from the edge of the area but Martyn managed to tip over.

And from the subsequent corner another Van Bommel shot was touched goalwards by Rommedahl, only for Martyn to make a brilliantly athletic save.

Just before the 15-minute mark Arnold Bruggink - completely unmarked - headed wide.

Leeds then bounced back with two chances of their own.

A Viduka header was cleared off the line by Andre Ooijer with Alan Smith closing in.

And shortly afterwards Smith's shot was parried by goalkeeper Patrick Lodewijks into the path of Viduka.

The Australian headed goalwards but he was again thwarted by a goalline clearance, this time by the superbly-named Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

PSV had a good penalty claim rejected after 27 minutes.

Martyn opted to punch a cross when there seemed to be little danger.

The ball dropped to Giorgi Gakhokidze, who smashed the ball towards goal.

Dominic Matteo blocked the ball, which looped upwards and hit the defender on the arm as it fell back to earth.

Chances were few and far between in the opening stages of the second-half but a Kewell volley after 59 minutes forced a good save by Lodewijks.

Eight minutes later Viduka headed inches wide as Leeds pushed for an away goal.

Leeds created several more half-chances but the game lacked the clear-cut opportunities of the first half.
