AC Milan helped ease the pressure on coach Fatih Terim by beating CSKA Sofia 2-0 at the San Siro.

Only 7,000 turned out to see Rui Costa and Andrey Shevchenko score the goals for Milan.

Terim had been heavily criticised following a run of poor results.

Fiorentina gained revenge on the side that dumped them out of the competition last season.

They beat Tirol Innsbruck 2-0 in Florence to put themselves in a strong position for the second leg.

Nicolas Anelka

Domenico Morfeo and Portuguese international Nuno Gomes scored for the Serie A side.

Brazilian Ronaldinho scored twice as French side Paris St Germain overwhelmed Rapid Vienna 4-0.

Midfielder Bernard Mendy and controversial striker Nicolas Anelka scored the other goals for Luis Fernandez's side.

Dutch giants Ajax held Copenhagen to a goalless draw in Denmark.

Valencia, Champions League runners-up for the past two seasons, were held 1-1 away at Legia Warsaw.

Bartosz Karwan scored for the Polish side in the 12th minute and Adrian Ilie equalised for Valencia with a penalty on the hour.

Sierra Leone striker Mohamed Kallon scored both of Inter Milan's goals as they beat Wisla Krakow 2-0.

The game had to be played in the neutral venue of Trieste because Inter are banned from their home ground, the San Siro, for Uefa Cup games following crowd trouble last season.

Varteks, who beat Premiership high-fliers Aston Villa in the first round, continued their run by beating experienced European side Brondby 3-1 at home.

Sasa Bjelanovic, Miljenko Mumlek and Veldin Karic scored in the second-half for Varteks, with Rafel Niznik getting a goal for the visitors.

Greek side PAOK Salonika secured the biggest winning margin of the day by beating Dukla Pribram of the Czech Republic 6-1.

Yasemis Yasemis and Yannis Okkas both scored twice, with Pantelis Konstantinidis and Luciano de Souza also on target for the Greek side.

Horst Siegl hit the consolation for the visitors.
