Tuesday's Uefa Cup second round review
Roda JC Kerkrade took a big step towards the third round when they beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-1 in the first leg of their second round tie. The Dutch side had a dream start when Tom Soetaers headed them ahead from a Frederik Berglund cross after only four minutes. Soetaers made it 2-0 after 38 minutes when the Maccabi goalkeeper Liran Strauber mishandled his shot. Berglund made it 3-0 after 54 minutes and Fatih Sonkaya added a fourth eight minutes from time. Ferenc Horvath scored for Maccabi after 78 minutes but skipper Avi Nimni wasted the chance to add a second for the visitors when he missed a late penalty. Hertha Berlin's top scorer Michael Preetz fired the German club to a 1-0 victory over Norway's Viking Stavanger. Preetz struck in the fifth minute when poor marking from Viking left him free to steer the ball home. Hertha held their lead, with the Norwegians offering little threat. Viking were left to chase the game unsuccessfully in an uneventful second half. The Viking players had their team shirts stolen from the dressing room just hours before the kick off but managed to recover them in time for the match.
