Leeds United showed glimpses of the form that took them to last season's Champions League semi-finals as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Portugal's Maritimo.

Goals from Robbie Keane - scoring his first European goal for Leeds - Harry Kewell and Eirik Bakke ensured that David O'Leary's side progressed 3-1 on aggregate.

The strike from Keane was the pick of the three goals.

The Republic of Ireland international missed out on Leeds's adventure in Europe last season because he had already played for Inter Milan in the qualifying round.

He did not take long to make up for lost time.

On 22 minutes he picked up David Batty's raking pass from the back just outside the Maritimo area.

Keane, despite being surrounded by three Maritimo players, flicked the ball away from his chasers, controlled the ball on his chest and then sent a vicious volley past Augusto Nelson.

The second goal soon followed, though this time it was Rio Ferdinand's raking 50-yard forward pass that found Mark Viduka scurrying into space.

The Australian looked up before picking out Kewell, who calmly headed home his third goal in two games following his double against Derby on Sunday.

Just after the hour Leeds made the game safe.

This time Keane turned supplier for Kewell, whose firm drive Nelson was unable to hold, allowing Bakke to force the ball home on the rebound.

Maritimo, unsettled by Leeds's dynamic play and occasionally by Danny Mills' overly-physical approach, rarely threatened Nigel Martyn.

Their best chance came just before Keane put Leeds ahead.

Brazilian Dinda's devastating free-kick from 45 yards out was low and powerful, forcing Martyn into a save to his right.

The acutely-angled follow-up fell to Quim Ferraz, but Martyn was again equal to the chance, parrying the ball away for a corner.
