Viking put Killie to sword

Viking FK 2-0 Kilmarnock (Agg: 3-1)

Kilmarnock's sad record of first-round exits from the Uefa Cup continued as they were comfortably beaten by Viking in Stavanger.

Tom Sanne and former Manchester United player Erik Nevland provided the goals that gave the Norwegians a deserved victory.

Kilmarnock are often more dangerous away from home, but they could not handle the pace of the Viking strikers as they failed to get past the first hurdle for the fourth time in a row.

The Scots' manager, Bobby Williamson, had left first-leg goalscorer Craig Dargo on the bench.

Dargo was on target as Killie earned a draw at Rugby Park, but the striker's starting place was taken by Michel Ngonge in the second leg.

Forced to play catch-up

Jesus Sanjuan replaced Antonio Calderon in midfield and Williamson's other change saw Mickael Pizzo back in the starting line-up.

Viking headed into the game with a different goalkeeper, first choice Bo Andersen returning from injury to replace Tore Snorteland, while Jorgen Tengesdal came in for Bjorn Berland up front.

Erik Nevland gave Killie a hard time
Kilmarnock had been forced to play catch-up in the first leg at Rugby Park and they went even more swiftly behind at the Stavanger Stadium.

Sanne fired the hosts ahead after just one minute.

The midfielder had grabbed the Norwegian's only goal in the first tie and he found his name on the scoresheet again when he was released by Tengesdal to fire past goalkeeper Gordon Marshall.

Killie could have levelled just two minutes later.

Sanjuan sent a superb ball from the right to Ngnonge, who found Alan Mahood, but the midfielder sent his effort yards over the crossbar.

Only the quick reaction of Marshall prevented Williamson's side falling two goals behind after six minutes when he saved from Bjorn Dahl's 20-yard free-kick.

Morten Berre then sent the ball through to Tengesdal out on the right wing, but he was denied when his shot smacked off the post.

Viking doubled their lead after 17 minutes.

Struggled to create chances

Tengesdal took the ball round Freddy Dindeleux before setting up Nevland to drive the ball past Marshall.

Nevland then met Thomas Pereira's cross and sent his effort inches wide of the upright.

Killie came more into the game but struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Tengesdal broke clear with only the goalkeeper to beat just after the break but somehow managed to chip the shot high and wide.

Ngonge played a short pass to Alan Mahood just outside the area and he fired a shot towards Bo Andersen's goal, but the ball just scraped past the post after 53 minutes and time ran out for Killie.
