Ronaldo back in business
Shevchenko (r) scored for AC Milan against Barisov
Uefa Cup round-up
Brazilian star Ronaldo played his first competitive match in 17 months to help Inter Milan beat Brasov 3-0. The striker, who had been sidelined with a knee injury since April last year, came off the bench 27 minutes from time in the first-round tie at the San Siro.
There was controversy in Belgium, when Strasbourg's extrovert keeper Jose Luis Chilavert was felled by a firecracker during his side's 2-0 defeat by Standard Liege. Chilavert needed medical attention after he was hit moments before half-time. Cash-strapped Fiorentina ground out a dull 0-0 draw in the Ukraine against Dnipro. AC Milan's rampaging wing-back Serginho was the star of the show against BATE Borisov, setting up both goals in a 2-0 victory.
HJK Helsinki goalkeeper Jani Viander put in an inspired display to restrict Parma to a 1-0 victory at the Ennio Tardini stadium. The Finnish international was beaten from the spot by former Aston Villa man Savo Milosevic in the 22nd minute but went on to deny the Yugoslav striker and Marco Marchionni with superb saves. Sedan's rise up the footballing ladder was brought to a halt by Dukla Pribram.
Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb scored as Sporting Lisbon hammered Midtjylland 3-0 away. Beto and Mario Jardel scored the other goals for the Portuguese outfit. A goal apiece from strike partnership Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Nikos Machlas gave Ajax a 2-0 win over Apollon Limassol of Cyprus in the Amsterdam Arena. |
