CD Alaves 5-1 FC Kaiserslautern

Spanish side Alaves virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the UEFA Cup final as they beat Kaiserslautern 5-1 in their semi-final first leg.

Alaves, playing in their first season in European competition, emerged winners after a match involving four penalties.

Alaves scored from three spot-kicks while Kaiserslautern converted their one penalty.

After an initial period of hectic pressure from the home side Romanian international Cosmin Contra made the most of some harsh refereeing to expertly score from the spot in the 20th and 31st minutes.

To the delight of the home fans Jordi Cruyff then stabbed home two minutes from the break to give the Basque side a 3-0 half-time lead.

Faint hopes

They were given even more to celebrate 11 minutes into the second half as the lively Cruyff was brought down once more in the area.

Uruguyan forward Ivan Alonso stepped up to make it 4-0.

The Germans were thrown a lifeline for the second leg when Harry Koch slotted home from the spot in the 66th minute.

But Magno Mocelin all but extinguished the German side's faint hopes as he sent a superb angled shot into the far corner on 81 minutes.
