Barcelona 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool's defence proved too difficult for Barcelona's attacking riches to break down in the first leg of this Uefa Cup semi-final.

Entertaining and exciting football was at a premium at the Nou Camp where the home side were mostly limited to long range attempts on goal.

Xavi had Barcelona's best chance of the game when he tried to place a shot from just inside the area.

Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld was equal to the challenge and saved well.

The Catalan side had gone on the offensive from the start but Liverpool held their shape and defensive lines with telling effect.

The visitors were on their guard and the Spanish team found it hard to prise open a threat on goal against an organised and disciplined defence.

Even former World Footballer of the Year and Brazilian Rivaldo had little affect on a Barcelona side who could not break the shackles placed on them.

The home team's most threatening period of pressure came early in the second half.

Shortly after causing some anxious moments in the Liverpool area, Luis Enrique had time to get in an angled drive but his effort was blocked by the lunging Jamie Carragher.

False dawn

From the resultant corner, the ball fell to Philip Cocu and he crossed for Patrick Kluivert at the near post.

The Dutch striker managed to get in a shot which went narrowly wide.

Liverpool had invited Barcelona onto them, but the home side were wary of the English side's counter-attacking threat, and were unable to capitalise.

Rivaldo looked like he was beginning to build up a head of steam after a slow start only for his efforts to prove a false dawn.

He cushioned a header into the path of Luis Enrique's charge into the Liverpool area, only for his team-mate to shoot off target.

The Brazilian then chested down a ball just outside the area, cut inside to wrong-foot defender Stephane Henchoz before shooting wide with his weaker right foot.

A rare Liverpool foray forward created the visitors' best opportunity on goal.

Steven Gerrard crossed to the far post where substitute Robbie Fowler had pulled off his marker only to head over with his effort.

Kluivert almost immediately produced a run to the by-line at the other end and tried to square the ball for Rivaldo but saw his cross blocked.

The goalless draw maintains Liverpool's unbeaten record in the competition away from home.
