Kaiserslautern 3-0 Rangers (Agg. 3-1)

Rangers' European hopes were destroyed before Christmas for the eighth consecutive year as Kaiserslautern overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to progress to the last 16 of the Uefa Cup.

Goals by Miroslav Klose, Andreas Buck and Vratislav Lokvenc were more than enough to see off a poor Rangers side who never looked like scoring.

The Germans always looked the more threatening and, had they scored with two late chances, it could have been even more embarrassing for the Ibrox club.

Rangers must now hope they can salvage their season by clawing back the 13-point lead held over them by Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.

Game over

It all began to go wrong for Rangers with little more than an hour gone, when a swift counter-attack found the visiting defence wanting.

Tugay watched Andreas Buck sprint past him and Klos could do nothing as the German slipped the ball inside his left-hand post.

Rangers had plenty of the ball but looked lightweight in attack, despite the introduction of Michael Mols and Neil McCann at the start of the second half.

Wallace came agonisingly close to an equaliser in 74 minutes as he threw himself at a McCann cross, but the covering defender diverted the ball wide.

The game was over for Rangers five minutes later - Dimitrios Grammozis turned inside Reyna and his cross was met by the head of Vratislav Lokvenc, who bulleted the ball beyond Klos.

Impressive start

Kaiserslautern had started the brighter, with Youri Djorkaeff firing the first shot wide on five minutes.

Rangers looked uneasy and the Germans took advantage in the seventh minute to level the tie on aggregate.

Miroslav Klose tied Scott Wilson in knots and, when the ball broke kindly for the striker, he struck a superb shot with the outside of his right foot high past Stefan Klos.

With the home side looking to capitalise on their impressive start, Klos presented them with an opportunity to double their lead by holding onto the ball too long.

Glaring opportunity

The goalkeeper did well to block the resultant free kick, though, and the Rangers defence cleared the rebound.

Having survived that scare, Rangers began to settle and Jorg Albertz had a clear sight of goal in 17 minutes, but his half-hit shot was saved by Koch.

Kenny Miller fired well over after good work by Wallace and Albertz had a header comfortably saved as the visitors sought to make amends.

Kaiserslautern then spurned two good chances on the half-hour - Strasser glanced a header wide when he ought to have done better and Youri Djorkaeff brought out an excellent double save from Klos.

Rangers should have equalised in 34 minutes when Reyna beat the German offside trap, but he elected to pass when he could have shot and Miller was unable to hit the target.

Lokvenc missed a glaring opportunity just before half-time when he headed wide with the Rangers defence posted missing.
