York City have signed striker Liam Henderson on a two-year deal after his release by Watford.

The 21-year-old spent the last five years with the Hornets and had loan spells with Colchester, Aldershot and Rotherham United last season.

Henderson told BBC Radio York: "I came down to meet the manager last week.

"I think what sold it most was the style of football and the ambition of the club and the manager and from there I knew I wanted to sign."

He added: "I haven't got experience of playing in the Conference but I've been told that League Two and the Conference is not much different.

"I've played in League Two so hopefully this season I can just kick on.

"I'm at that stage in my career now where I need to play games. Sometimes you have to take one step back to take two forward.

"The challenge of playing competitive games for a whole season and score goals is what I came here to do."

Henderson has also had loan spells with Wealdstone and Hartlepool United.

Manager Gary Mills said: "He's a good player. He's exciting. He's young, he's ambitious.

"He's coming for one reason only and that's to get back in the League with York and be a League player again.

"I've been chasing him for a while. It's taken a few weeks.

"He's taken stock of everything that's been available to him and he's chosen York City. I think that says something about this football club."
