York supporters help out Weymouth

York City

A York City supporters group have sponsored the transport costs of Weymouth fans travelling to Saturday's game at Kitkat Crescent.

York Minstermen have paid for the minibus and City themselves have offered complimentary tickets.

The gesture follows Weymouth's financial problems which led to their senior players walking out.

Weymouth Supporters Club chairman Ian White told BBC Radio York: "It's absolutely fantastic."

Chairman of York Minstermen, Frank Ormston said: "When you see a club in the same sort of difficulty as York City was in the past, City supporters felt they had to act.

"Given that we were playing them this weekend it seemed appropriate and as a group we had a quick chat and thought it would be a good way to help.

"It's a gesture of solidarity. It won't make a whole amount of difference to what happens to Weymouth but if we can make their supporters feel a bit better and know that other people are backing them to save the club then so much the better.

All of us that are travelling up on Saturday are really looking forward to meeting every one of them and saying thank you

"The solidarity doesn't stop with what we've done. Some of the younger supporters are doing a bucket collection in the car park so if other City fans want to give some money to the Weymouth fighting fund they'll be able to do that as well."

Teesside League club Scarborough Town have also offered to provide a buffet in the York City Social Club for the Weymouth fans after the game.

White added: "Because of the Minstermen's great offer to us and the clubs as well, technically it means our fans can travel up to the game for nothing.

"But what we're doing on Saturday is saying 'look, this is saving you the best part of 50 apiece'.

"It's a long way as York fans know - it's like going from one end of the earth to the other.

"Some have suggested they'll donate some of the money if not all of the money into our own fighting fund which is a fantastic gesture.

"The show of generosity is just beyond all belief and all of us that are travelling up on Saturday are really looking forward to meeting everyone of them and saying thank you."
