Seven players exit York
Relegated-York City have told seven players they can leave as part of the club's cost-cutting measures.

Captain Darren Edmondson and Mark Ovendale, along with Chris Smith, Mitch Ward, Christian Fox, Stephen Brackstone and Stephen Downes, are to be released.

They have been made offers to terminate their contracts by mutual consent.

Goalkeeper Chris Porter has signed a new deal and contract offers have been made to Lev Yalcin, Matthew Coad, Graeme Law and Sean Davis.

York player-boss Chris Brass, player-coach Lee Nogan and midfielder Darren Dunning are the only senior players currently under contract for next season.

"It's a matter for the club's board to balance the books," said Paul Rawnsley, a member of the York City Supporters Trust.

"And as I've said before, generally clubs need to get their wage bills down to an amount that is approximately equivalent to about 70% of its income.

"So I think it's inevitable that there will be departures from York City this season."
