Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doherty is closing in on a return to first-team action after suffering a knee injury in pre-season.

The former Northern Ireland international played for the reserves in the midweek draw with Southend.

Manager Gary Waddock told BBC Three Counties Radio: "He got 70 minutes. I'll have a chat with him but I don't want to rush him back.

"When he's ready we'll put him back in. The team has missed Tommy."

Doherty impressed for Wycombe last season as they won promotion from League Two.

The 30-year-old joined the Chairboys from Queens Park Rangers in January 2008 and has made 53 league appearances.
