Dean Saunders hopes for Wrexham transfer funds

Dean Saunders has asked the Wrexham board to boost their Blue Square Bet Conference play-off push and splash out on new players in the transfer window.

French striker Mathias Pogba scored his first Wrexham goal in their win over Bath City and Saunders hopes to sign Mark Creighton on a full-time basis.

Saunders feels Wrexham's play-off charge will suffer should his 21-man squad endure injuries and suspensions.

"I'm hoping the directors can come up with some money for us," said Saunders.

Defender Creighton has started five out of a possible six games for Wrexham since his loan move from League Two Oxford United in November.

Rookie Pogba did his first-team chances no harm with a goal in Wrexham's 2-0 league victory over Bath on Monday.

Wrexham extended their unbeaten league run to nine games with victory over in-form Bath and moved to within three points of the play-off places.

Now Saunders, who has bought and sold more than 50 players since becoming Wrexham boss in October 2008, wants a fresh injection of new faces in the January transfer window to strengthen his seventh-placed side.

"It is not a big squad," insists Saunders.

"My players are not earning the types of money that Luton and Crawley players are.

"I had to lose a few players in the summer to give the new players more wages to get them here so we are a bit a short.

"But we have to bring the right players in. I'm not going to bring in players that won't get in the team. They must be an improvement to the squad.

"And we will have to buy players, if you're getting a free transfer in January something is wrong."

Creighton, meanwhile, has impressed in a Wrexham team that has kept three successive clean sheets and climbed into the Conference chasing pack.

The 29-year-old centre-back is on loan at The Racecourse until January but Saunders is hoping he can keep Creighton longer.

"Hopefully he can stay," said Saunders.

"But he is earning more money at Oxford than we're paying him at the moment. He has a year left but we will try to come an agreement as he likes it here.

"He is the right player in this league and does great for us."
