Musampa quashes Wrexham rumours

Former Manchester City winger Kizito Musampa has denied reports that he had been in negotiations to join Wrexham.

Musampa's brother, Jean - who is a football agent but the player says does not represent him - had been a guest of the Blue Square Premier club.

Wrexham believed that Jean, who attended the York City match, was an official representative of his brother.

"Wrexham? I never had contact with anybody from that team or that club," the player, 31, told BBC Sport Wales.

"As soon as I heard the news I called him (Jean) and asked him what it's all about, people asking me if I'm going there and I was supposed to go and play some games, or whatever.

"He told me he doesn't know because he just came back from Belgium.

"But he did tell me that he spoke to some people from that club (Wrexham) but he didn't find it necessary to get back to me about that information.

"Jean is my brother, so as a brother you kind of represent the people from your family, but he's not my trade agent.

Jean is an agent as well... if he goes to a game in Wrexham and to talk, what can I say?

"Of course if Jean got something interesting then I'll talk to him but he's not my agent on paper."

Musampa played across Europe, with spells at Bordeaux, Malaga, Atletico Madrid before joining Manchester City in 2005 on a long-term loan.

He has also played at Trabzonspor, AZ Alkmaar and FC Seoul.

Musampa and his official agent, Dennis Murray, were unhappy that the player was being linked with a non-League side.

Wrexham were under the impression that Musampa could join them on a short-term deal that would act as a 'shop window' to help him get a contract with a bigger club.

"The news came over to me like I was in Wrexham and I went to watch a game but I didn't... maybe Jean did," Musampa added.

"Jean is an agent as well and he does do his work, and me - as his brother - I cannot stop him from doing his work.

"If he goes to a game in Wrexham and to talk, what can I say? You've got to let people be free to do their jobs so there's not much I can say or do about it.

"All I can say is that there's nothing going on between me and the club."

Musampa also denied that he had ever had dealings with new Wrexham manager Dean Saunders, the former Wales striker.

Saunders told BBC Sport Wales that he had spoken with a "third party" about trying to sign Musampa.

"It was through third parties, I never spoke to him, it didn't get that far but we tried and it looks as if it's not going to happen," Saunders said.

"Nothing's ever dead until you're told so but I don't think that's going to happen and we've got loads of other things on the go.

"It's not for the want of trying, we'd try to get Thierry Henry here if we could!"

Former Netherlands Under-21 star Musampa, a graduate of the renowned Ajax football academy, is back training with former club Alkmaar.

But the Democratic Republic of the Congo-born player says he expects to depart the Dutch club soon for new pastures, which Musampa does not expect to be in Britain.

"I'm still training with them (Alkmaar) to keep fit until December and then I will move on to something else," Musampa added.

"For the moment it's not sure yet, but we have a good option which is something quite special and quite different.

"But it's going to be clear in a couple of days, it's big news yes... it's something for the future as well.

"If this goes through the chances (of joining a British club) are going to be very small."

Clubs such as Sunderland and Sheffield United are thought to have been among the clubs interested in the possibility of signing Musampa.
