Wrexham manager praised young defenders Gareth Evans and Mike Williams after Saturday's 1-0 win over Darlington.
Smith's squad had been ravaged by injury
"It's possibly the youngest centre-back pairing the club's ever put out and I think they did tremendously well," said Smith of Evans, 19, and Williams, 20.
"I'm delighted with the way they played and I think the lads applied themselves well in difficult circumstances.
"It was a patched-up team so I'm pleased to get the three points. It's a good way to start the festive season."
He added: "The cleansheet was vital and our 'keeper Mike Ingham didn't have many shots to save.
"Their 'keeper was far busier, but we had to work hard to get ourselves organised, and fair play the lads did that."
