Phillips considers Wrexham future
Wayne Phillips
Phillips has spent most of his career at Wrexham
Wayne Phillips is considering his future with Wrexham after being put on a monthly contract.

The 31-year-old midfielder has already seen his wages cut by half following big cost-saving measures at the Racecourse as Wrexham struggle to make ends meet.

A succession of injuries have limited his appearances in the past two seasons and Phillips met manager Denis Smith on Monday for crisis talks.

"The manager has had his hands tied," Phillips said. "He's been keeping me informed over the summer what the situation is and I've had a good long chat with him yesterday.

Do I take a gamble and stay here in Wrexham

"It's been a difficult situation for the club as well as me, but the main problem is the uncertainty about my future.

"Do I take a gamble and stay here in Wrexham and hope something comes after the month or - if the opportunity comes - do I move onto something a bit more secure."

Phillips first joined Wrexham as trainee in 1989. He left in a £200,000 transfer to Stockport in 1998 but rejoined the Dragons a year later where he has been ever since.

"Everybody knows how much it means to me to play for Wrexham," Phillips said.

"My family has settled down here - we've been here for 10 years - and it's a major step to move on, but if the opportunity does come we'll have to consider it."

The collapse of ITV Digital in May and the accompanying loss of TV revenue has seen almost all of the Nationwide League clubs forced to adopt cost-cutting measures.

"It's difficult to take when your future relies not on how you've performed on the pitch but on the financial situation at the club," Phillips added.
