Surman strike enough for Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves beat Walsall 1-0

New signing Andrew Surman scored a first-half winner for Wolves in their pre-season friendly at Walsall on Tuesday evening.

The 22-year-old midfielder signed a three year deal at Molineux earlier this month, after deciding to leave Southampton for a seven figure fee.

He struck after 16 minutes in the match at the Banks' Stadium, in front of a crowd of almost 6,000.

Walsall played trialists Jamie Vincent and Peter Till in the match.

Wolves split their first-team squad into two for the friendly match, with the other half facing Port Vale on Wednesday night.

The Wolves boss Mick McCarthy told BBC WM it is important that as many players as possible get the chance to play.

"I hate pre-season games. It's just a matter of grinding them out and getting fit.

"I think one or two of our players started to struggle a bit, but we've come away unscathed. We've got no injuries from it."

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings also found the workout useful for his players.

"It is only our second pre-season game. I'm trying to rotate the squad as much as possible to give every play an equal time on the pitch."

Vincent and Till are likely to play in Saturday's friendly against West Bromwich Albion, and Hutchings added that there could be more signings to come.

"Hopefully we can bring one or two more in. We need another left back, as we only have Netan Sansara on the books at the moment, and possibly another centre back."
