Wigan have signed Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno from Shakhtar Donetsk until the end of the season, subject to international and visa clearance.

The move will be completed provided the 22-year-old is granted a work permit.

Moreno, who has also played on loan at German club Werder Bremen this season, has scored seven goals in 17 matches for Bolivia.

Moreno said: "[Wigan manager] Roberto Martinez sold the club to me. I am determined to make an impression."

He added: "I want to do everything I can to get in the team now and I'm looking forward to meeting all my new team mates and fighting for my place."

Martinez added: "He is young, a superb athlete, good in the air, technically good with both feet and he will add something new.

"Shakhtar paid nine million Euros for him 18 months ago, which shows you how highly he is regarded, and he has all the ingredients to become a big player in this country.

Sheikh Mahand

"He still needs to find his feet in Europe, and we are confident that this will be at Wigan.

"Let's see what happens over the next few months but he certainly fits the bill for what we are looking for at Wigan Athletic."

Moreno is the second striker to arrive at the DW Stadium on transfer deadline day following the signing of Victor Moses from Crystal Palace.

Moreno takes the number 18 shirt at Wigan but is not eligible for Tuesday's FA Cup replay against Notts County.
