Wigan have signed Honduran international Wilson Palacios for an undisclosed fee from Deportivo Olimpia.
The 23-year-old midfielder has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at the JJB Stadium and is manager Steve Bruce's first signing for the club.
Palacios played six times while on-loan at Birmingham earlier this season and the Wigan boss is confident his new recruit can make an impact.
"I know Wilson well and I have seen what he can do," Bruce said.
Speaking to the club's official website, he added: "I have stated from the day that I walked into the club that we would only bring in players who would improve the squad and offer something different.

"He has strength and vision; he can pass a ball with either foot and he has had some time to adjust to the rigour of the Premier League."
Palacios, who has been capped 42 times by his country, goes straight into the Wigan squad that travel to Derby on Saturday.
"I am really happy to sign for Wigan," he said. "I like Steve as a manager and I think it is an ambitious club that is going places. I can't wait to get started now.
"When the loan finished at Birmingham, Wigan were the first to come in and make me an offer - and now I want to focus everything on doing my best here."
