Rioch's resignation rocks Wigan
Bruce Rioch
Rioch was under pressure to win promotion
Bruce Rioch has quit as manager of Second Division promotion hopefuls Wigan.

The decision comes as a shock, with the Latics currently fourth in the table, just 10 points behind leaders Millwall.

"After a marvellous career in football things have unfortunately not worked out for Bruce at Wigan, and he has requested that he be released from his position," read a club statement.

The exact reason for Rioch's shock exit is unclear, but the huge weight of expectation could well be a factor.

Wigan are anxious to win promotion after moving to an new stadium and they recently had a 1.5m bid for Brighton striker Bobby Zamora turned down.

Colin Greenall takes temporary charge as a long-term replacement is sought.
