Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has agreed a year-long loan with West Ham.
The Hammers have been searching for a replacement for Freddie Kanoute, who joined Spurs on Monday.
West Ham manager Glenn Roeder is hoping an attack comprising Jermain Defoe £285,000 signing David Connolly and Mellor can propel the club back to the Premiership.
Roeder said: "I'm of the same opinion as Gerrard Houllier. He's an excellent
prospect and he's come in here on a year's loan.
"We'll make enough chances for those three to score enough goals for us to
come back up."
A prolific goalscorer in Liverpool's reserves, Mellor's potential secured him a one-year contract extension at Anfield last year, but his progress has only produced six first-team starts for the Reds.
The 20-year-old played in last Sunday's friendly with Galatasaray in the Amsterdam Tournament, but was sent off along with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool lost 2-1.
