Ferdinand joins West Ham
Les Ferdinand joins West Ham
Ferdinand has made just five starts this season
Les Ferdinand has completed his switch from Tottenham to West Ham for an undisclosed fee.

The 36-year-old striker has signed a contract with the Hammers until the end of the season and boss Glenn Roeder is hoping Ferdinand will play a key role in his team's battle to avoid relegation.

"We targeted Les quite a long time ago now," Roeder told the club's official website.

"We had to wait for the window to open, and then for Tottenham to give us permission to talk to him, which has enabled us to bring him to Upton Park at last.

I was looking for an experienced striker that has been there and done it

Glenn Roeder
"When I spoke to Les he was very enthusiastic about joining us.

"He has got the belief, like the rest of the squad, that we will have climbed out the bottom three come the middle of May, and achieved our goal for this season."

"I was looking for an experienced striker that has been there and done it, who knows what it is all about, and Les simply falls into that category.

Ferdinand passed a medical on Monday and trained with his new team-mates on Tuesday morning.

He goes straight into the Hammers squad ahead of their match against Charlton at the Valley on Wednesday.

Ferdinand had struggled to find a place in Spurs' first team this season following Glenn Hoddle's purchase of Robbie Keane from Leeds.

The striker joined Spurs in 1997 from Newcastle for 6m and had his most productive spell at White Hart Lane last season with 15 goals in 33 appearances.

However, he has made just five starts this season, scoring twice and was out of contract at the end of the campaign.
