Roeder denies Bowyer bonus
Lee Bowyer in action for Leeds
Roeder has tipped Bowyer to make a big impact
West Ham boss Glenn Roeder has dismissed claims new signing Lee Bowyer will get a 1m bonus if he helps the club avoid relegation from the Premiership.

The Hammers are bottom of the top-flight and have signed the midfielder and boyhood West Ham fan on a six-month contract.

"Lee has come into our pay structure," insisted Roeder. "He has not gone outside that.

"When his agent, David Geiss, and West Ham managing director Paul Aldridge sat down and spoke a deal was struck very quickly.

"The money side of it was not the main driving force behind it. He wanted to come here and help us survive.

"Those figures that have been banded about are way, way off the mark.

"It doesn't do anyone any favours but I can set the record straight that he has come within our pay structure."

He added: "I hope he can help us remain in the Premiership.

"If we achieve that - and we badly want to - then it would be nice to have made such a good impression on Lee that he actually does want to stay.

"But that is a fair bit down the road at the moment."

But Roeder is confident Bowyer will have a good effect on the other players at the club.

"All of our players are very positive about Lee's arrival, and I think the younger players like Michael Carrick and Joe Cole in midfield will also learn and benefit from the qualities Lee has.

"I am sure Lee will settle in very quickly, and the rest of the lads will make him feel very much at home and welcome."
