Winterburn stays on
Nigel Winterburn
Winterburn is remaining in East London
Veteran defender Nigel Winterburn has agreed a new one-year deal with West Ham.

The contract is a major boost for the 38-year-old who had previously been told he was surplus to requirements at Upton Park.

But boss Glenn Roeder has since had a change of heart after Winterburn agreed to a substantial cut in wages.

Winterburn has been told that first-team football is not guaranteed next year.

But he has opted to spend possibly his last season as part of a Premiership squad rather than drop a division.

I am very pleased after being told six weeks ago I was not wanted as such

And he has vowed to push Vladimir Labant for the left-back spot.

Winterburn told the club's official website: "I have agreed to take a big pay cut and luckily for me the club seem to have had a change of heart.

"Now we've reached agreement, I've got to try and get in the team - but it's a case of seeing what happens, and, as always, I will give 100%.

"If West Ham hadn't changed their minds it would have been first division football for me.

"It means I will be bowing out against the best players in the world, and I am very pleased after being told six weeks ago I was not wanted as such."

Roeder is delighted that matters have worked out for all concerned.

"Nigel has earned another year, completely on merit and form," he said.

"There is no room for sentiment in football, and if I didn't think he could play another year I wouldn't have offered him it.

"I looked at the whole season, but particularly the last five or six weeks - next year will be his last year, and that will be motivation enough for him."
