Hammers close in on Labant
Vladimir Labant closes down a Bayern Munich player in Champions League action for Sparta Prague
Labant has experience of the Champions League
West Ham United are set to sign 1m-rated Slovakian international Vladimir Labant from Sparta Prague.

The club still need to obtain a work permit and the 27-year-old must pass a medical before the deal can be completed.

The left-back will fly to England on Wednesday night from Prague to try to complete the formalities of the 1m move.

It is definitely my ambition to get back into Europe with West Ham

West Ham boss Glenn Roeder said: "We are trying to complete the deal in the next day or two.

"If we get the green light, which we hope to, it is a question of whether we can get him registered in time to be involved against Leicester.

"I will only know he is our player when the ink has dried. We think we are there and it is just a question of whether we can get it all tied up in the next day or two.

"With the squad so small and the games coming in thick and fast we are definitely going to need more bodies, and he has got just the experience I was looking for."

The player, who has 17 international caps, explained his reasons for the move.

"It is maybe not the best time to leave Sparta Prague because they are still in the Champions' League," he told the club's official website.

"But the offer was good and you don't get the chance to join a Premiership club every day - that is where I want to play."

Several English clubs are reported to have been interested in the player and Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven tried to sign him in the summer.
