Hodgson a key factor in West Brom move - Long

Shane Long says the prospect of working with Roy Hodgson was an important factor in his decision to leave Reading for West Brom.

Long joined the Baggies for an undisclosed fee and, while sad to leave the Royals, is excited by the move.

"The manager has been to some big clubs and I think I'll learn a lot from him as a player," Long told BBC Berkshire.

"I wasn't mad to leave, I love it here, but the chance to go to a Premier League side was hard to turn down."

With reported interest from fellow Championship sides West Ham and Leicester, Long added that he was pleased to not have to face his former team-mates in the league this season.

"It would be tough to come to the Madejski and try to score past Adam [Federici]. But you never know, we've met West Brom in the cup the last couple of years," he continued.

West Brom open their season at home to Manchester United on Sunday, and Long is hopeful the team will be able to build on last year's progress.

"They're a good club with good players. They finished 11th last season and they're a team on the up. Hopefully we can finish in the top 10 this season."
