West Brom's Paul Scharner unpunished over criticism

West Brom defender Paul Scharner will escape any punishment from the club after criticising his team-mates.

Scharner, 30, claimed the Baggies players had become "lazy" after the abolition of dressing-room fines, which are separate from club discipline.

"I like players with opinions but you need to choose when to do it publicly and when to do it internally," said West Brom boss Roberto di Matteo.

"Will there be any action against Scharner? No."

Scharner's comments came before the Baggies beat Blackpool 3-2 in an entertaining game on Saturday as the Midlands side halted a run of five league defeats.

He believed the team's loss of form and focus coincided with them abandoning their dressing-room fine system and the Austrian said the players at the club needed to "wake-up".

But Di Matteo added: "We haven't got an issue and, if there is anything to deal with, we'll deal with it internally but there's no great issue.

"Scharner's comments were a reference to something in particular which is not a great deal."

Midfielder Chris Brunt captained West Brom against Blackpool and feels Scharner's publicly expressed views did not play a part in the win over the Tangerines.

"We saw the comments and it's disappointing that they were made to the press and not to the players," he told the Birmingham Mail.

"But everybody is entitled to their opinion and if that's his opinion that's fine.

"Maybe he thought it would get a reaction and if he feels happy with that it's fine. That's his judgement.

"We were a little bit disappointed but things are said and we will draw a line under it."

He added: "I don't think this had anything to do with our result. I think we were due a bit of luck."
