West Brom boss Di Matteo signs Nicky Shorey

Former England full-back Nicky Shorey has joined West Brom from local rivals Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Baggies, who have the option of a further year.

"I'm delighted to welcome Nicky to the club - he is a player I've liked for some time," said West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo.

"He's an experienced, solid, reliable left-back who likes to get forward and get involved."

Shorey is the club's fifth summer signing, following in the footsteps of Pablo Ibanez, Steven Reid, Boaz Myhill and Gabriel Tamas.

After starting his career at Leyton Orient in 1998, Shorey moved to Reading in February 2001 and went on to make almost 300 league and cup appearances for the Royals.

He moved to Villa in the summer of 2008 but found first-team chances harder to come by, managing only 37 appearances.

Last season Shorey had loan spells at both Nottingham Forest and Fulham.

His two England caps came in friendlies against Brazil and Germany in 2007.
