Di Matteo has sympathy for Koren

West Brom head coach Roberto Di Matteo has said he has sympathy with want-away midfielder Robert Koren.

After starting just one of the Baggies last seven league games, Koren told a website in his native Slovenia that "I don't see eye to eye" with Di Matteo.

But Di Matteo told the club's website: "I think he is a very good footballer, and I wouldn't want to lose him.

"He is at an age where he doesn't want to be on the bench, and he is captain of his national team."

Koren, 29, has lost his place in the centre of the West Brom midfield to youngsters Graham Dorrans and Youssuf Mulumbu.

He also appears to be behind Chile international Gonzalo Jara in the pecking order, and has found himself being predominantly used in a wide role by Di Matteo.

"When I moved here we had a lot of central midfield players, quite a lot of them with similar ability," added Di Matteo.

"I've had a chat with Robert, and he wants to play. But, from my point of view I also need to have a look at what is the best possible team to win on any given day."
