Celtic and Twente targeting Cech

Mark Cech in action for West Brom
Tony Mowbray could have allowed Cech to leave West Brom in January

Marek Cech's agent says Celtic and Twente are interested in buying the left-back but that West Brom are determined to retain the 26-year-old.

Juraj Venglos told Slovak news agency SITA: "I can confirm that Twente would very much like to capture Marek.

"Apart from the Dutch club, Celtic are also maintaining their strong interest.

"But the problem is that West Brom do not want to release him. Roberto Di Matteo counts on him as a member of his squad for the upcoming season."

Venglos did not rule out a transfer but thought it likely that Cech would be in relegated West Brom's squad as they attempt to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

"I believe that everything will be sorted properly within this week," said the agent.

"It is also possible that Marek will spend another season at West Brom."

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray took Cech to The Hawthorns from Porto in a £1.4m deal last summer.

The Slovak struggled to dislodge Paul Robinson, making only three league starts and five substitute appearances all season.

And, in January, Mowbray hinted that he would allow Cech, who was critical of his manager because of his lack of games, to leave West Brom.

But, after Mowbray moved to Celtic, new manager Di Matteo has allowed Robinson to move to Bolton on a season-long loan in the top-flight with a view to a permanent deal.

Mowbray has already signed Marc-Antoine Fortune from Nancy this summer after the striker spent a spell on loan to West Brom.

And Venglos claims that the Celtic manager is again looking to turn to a trusted performer to fill his new club's troublesome left-back spot.

Prior to the departure of Robinson Cech had expressed his desire to leave the club.

However, Di Matteo is now likely to look to the Slovak to become a permanent fixture in his side's Championship campaign now that Robinson has left the Hawthorns.

Di Matteo has already stressed that he does not want - or need - to part ways with any members of his squad.
