Robson puts pressure on defenders
West Brom goalkeeper Russell Hoult
Robson has blamed goalkeeper Russell Hoult for his side's failings
West Brom boss Bryan Robson has warned his underperforming defence they are playing for their places after a series of costly errors.

Robson has called on his players to cut out the individual lapses after the Baggies let winning positions slip against Crystal Palace and Norwich.

"We just can't afford too many more mistakes and that goes for everyone on the defensive side," said Robson.

"If they do not improve, then they are going to be out of the team."

The Baggies have enjoyed an upturn in form, but their efforts have been undermined by individual errors at the back for costing them valuable points against their fellow strugglers.

"I am still encouraged by the fact that we are playing well," said Robson.

Russell Hoult needs his form to come back
West Brom boss Bryan Robson
"But we have got to cut out the mistakes that are costing us games.

"There has been some real poor defending in the last two games. And it is not a collective thing. It is individuals who are letting us down with lack of concentration.

"Look at Russell Hoult for the first goal at Norwich. You just cannot understand why he is not stronger when he is going for the ball.

"He went through a period when he was doing very well and was absolutely outstanding against Manchester City - but Russell needs his form to come back.

"As for the second goal, Darren Purse stays in there when all of the others have come out in a real good line and leaves five Norwich players onside. He was sleeping and that lapse of concentration has cost us a goal.

"It makes all the work we have done on the training ground a waste of time - and you cannot win Premiership games if you keep making mistakes like that."

  • Meanwhile, the Baggies have terminated the contracts of Adam Chambers, Sekou Berthe and Simon Miotto by mutual consent.

Robson said: "I decided Adam, Sekou and Simon are not part of my plans a few weeks ago but they're all terrific pros who I'm sure will do a good job elsewhere."
