Rios snubs Baggies
Roberto Rios in action for Spain
Rios was Bilbao's record signing in 1997
Former Spain defender Roberto Rios has turned down the chance to join West Brom and opted to retire from football.

Rios, released by Atletico Bilbao last summer, had been training with the Baggies and boss Gary Megson was keen to sign the player.

But Rios has decided he is not fit enough for the rigours of the Premiership.

"I don't want to try and fool anyone," said Rios.

Everything is decided and I am leaving football for good

Roberto Rios
"I know I need a month to get into the physical shape I need to be able to play well and there wouldn't be much time left in the season by the time I was fully fit.

"I am doing this with a completely clear conscience.

"Everything is decided and I am leaving football for good."

The 31-year-old remains the most expensive transfer in Athletic Bilbao's history following his 7.9m move in 1997.

Megson has completed the loan signing of Nigerian international wing-back Ifeanyi Udeze from PAOK Salonika for the rest of the season since the transfer window opened.

Udeze will play for the reserves against Birmingham on Wednesday having been a non-playing substitute at Leeds on Saturday.

But seems to have missed on out-of-favour Tottenham midfielder Tim Sherwood, who is set to join Division One leaders Portsmouth.

Meanwhile West Brom defender Igor Balis has suffered a fresh injury setback which could keep him out of action for up to a month.

The Slovakian right wing-back limped out of the goalless draw at Leeds with medial knee ligament damage, and will be ruled out for three to four weeks.
