Watford sign goalkeeper Gilmartin and defender Aldred

Watford have signed Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin and Carlisle defender Tom Aldred on two-year contracts, both with the option of a third year.

Gilmartin's contract at the Saddlers had expired, but as the 23-year-old came up through the youth team, the club are entitled to compensation.

Aldred, 19, recently turned down an offer to stay at Carlisle.

Watford have made a compensation offer for the former Carlisle youth captain and former Scotland under-19 player.

Dublin-born Gilmartin, who made 36 appearances for Walsall, will compete for a starting place with Watford's other young goalkeeper, 22-year-old Scott Loach.

Having captained their youth team, Aldred went on to make four senior appearances for the Brunton Park club.
