Russo delighted with Rodgers fee

Watford chairman Jimmy Russo has called the compensation package agreed with Reading for manager Brendan Rodgers an "incredible deal".

Reading will pay an initial £500,000 and the fee could reach £1m.

Russo told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I think we achieved an incredibly good deal considering he was in our employment for seven months only.

"He couldn't be interviewed unless he had our written permission, so I think out of a massive loser, we did well."

Rodgers only became Watford boss in November, his first managerial role, but left for former club Reading on Friday.

And Russo continued: "I didn't want to let him go if the truth be known. I have enjoyed a very good working relationship with Brendan.

"I had a conversation with him last Tuesday, he happened to be on holiday in Ireland and I was concerned about the rumours that were going around and he assured me there was no need to worry and that his future lay at Watford.

"What worried me was that one of the leading bookmakers laid him at 6/5 on to take the Reading job. Whether that was because people knew certain things I'm not too sure, but my concern as chairman of the club was that 'these rumours were so strong, was there any fire behind the smoke?'"

Rodgers could potentially try to bring some of the Hornets' talented youngsters to the Madejski Stadium and Russo said: "At the end of the day that would have to be a board decision. I don't particularly want to sell any players.

I can assure the Watford fans that we will get a Watford person onboard. Somebody that understands the culture, somebody that understands the job

"But you have got to remember that the financial situation here that I inherited along with my brother was not a very good one and my priority is to make sure that the club has salvation.

"I have to be careful and look at a deal. It has to be right for the club in the long term."

The search now begins for Rodgers replacement.

"It's early days yet. I can assure the Watford fans that we will get a Watford person onboard. Somebody that understands the culture, somebody that understands the job in hand," said Russo.
