Survival would be proud moment for Walsall's Butler

Captain Andy Butler has said leading Walsall to League One survival would be the proudest moment of his career.

Dean Smith's side are one point above the relegation zone with two matches, at home to Charlton and away at Southampton, left to play.

The 27-year-old defender told BBC WM: "If we stay up, this would be the best achievement I've had in football, even taking promotions into account.

"I'd love to lead the team out at Southampton knowing that we're safe."

The Saddlers looked almost certain to be relegated to League Two at the turn of the year but a consistent run of form since Smith's appointment as manager in January has given Walsall an excellent chance of avoiding the drop.

"It's a credit to the lads and the management to turn it around," said Butler. "People thought we were down and out.

"We've got a great team spirit here and we'll keep fighting until the last kick of the season."

A victory on Saturday could be enough to secure survival, although that would depend on results elsewhere.

Bristol Rovers and Dagenham & Redbridge would both need to lose their matches on Saturday, while Plymouth would need to pick up at least three points from their games against Exeter on Saturday and Southampton on Monday to stand any chance of overhauling Walsall on the final day.

Aaron Lescott will be missing for the game against Charlton with an ankle problem but Smith is hopeful he will be fit for the trip to St Mary's on the final day of the campaign.
