Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince has signed a new one-year contract with the League One club.

The Trinidad and Tobago international, 37, returned to training after international duty to pen a deal that includes the option of a second year.

"I want to maintain the high standards that I set myself last year and build upon them," he told the club's website.

"I'm happy with the news, the manager is happy, and hopefully the supporters will be happy too."

He added: "We put down the foundations last season and did well. We have some promising young lads and an excellent team spirit, which will count for a lot."

Ince's decision to remain at the Banks's Stadium means he will again be competing with young Irishman Rene Gilmartin for the goalkeeper's jersey, a situation that boss Chris Hutchings relishes.

"We now have good competition in the goalkeeping department with Rene working hard during pre-season," Hutchings said.

"We will use both players during the pre-season programme of matches - Clayton has been playing and training throughout the summer but has had the last two weeks off, so we will monitor his fitness."

Ince, who was named the club's player of the season for 2008/09, has made 142 first-team appearances for the Saddlers in his three seasons at the club, and is looking forward to his fourth campaign at the Banks's Stadium.

"I think that league One is going to be just as exciting as the Premier League and Championship this season," he noted.

"There are some big clubs and it's going to be a real challenge for us, but we have a fighting chance."
