New boss made me stay - Boertien

Paul Boertien will now stay with Walsall until at least the end of the season

Walsall defender Paul Boertien says he would probably not still be at the club if Chris Hutchings had not been appointed as the Saddlers' new boss.

Boertien, 30, had been out of contract at The Banks's Stadium but signed a new deal until the end of the season once Hutchings arrived.

"My contract was up and I didn't know what was going to happen," Boertien told BBC WM.

"The gaffer came in and wanted me to stay and played a big part in that."

Boertien, who joined Walsall in the summer of 2007 after being released by Derby County, admitted to concerns when there was no sign of an immediate resolution to his future.

"It looked like nothing was going to happen for whatever reason," he said. "I wanted to stay and the club didn't seem to be sorting anything out.

"But the new gaffer wanted me and spoke to the chairman and I've managed to stay and that's good."

Boertien is playing his part in the mini-revival under Hutchings, who came in on 20 January, eight points having now been gained from the Saddlers' last five matches.

And the left-back admits he is enjoying his partnership with in-form winger Sofiane Zaaboub.

"Sofie's very confident at the moment," added Boertien. "I think he was criticised for his work rate by the old regime but the new gaffer has given him a lot of confidence.

"He's got pace and a great delivery and he's a threat. No-one likes playing against him.

"He's tracking back and making tackles. He's brilliant to play with."
