Hughes completes Saddlers switch

Stephen Hughes
Hughes decided to leave Coventry at the end of last season

Walsall have completed the free transfer signing of former Coventry City captain Stephen Hughes.

Boss Jimmy Mullen told BBC WM he had to move quickly to make sure he did not miss out on Hughes, 31, and is sure he will be an excellent captain.

"I found out that Steve was a free agent out of the blue and immediately I set the ball in motion to sign him.

"It's taken a few weeks to do but he's experienced and is an ideal captain for the younger guys to look up to."

Hughes, who led the Saddlers' side in Saturday's friendly win at Port Vale, started his career at Arsenal and went on to make nearly 80 appearances for the Gunners.

He joined Fulham on loan before signing for Everton in a 3m deal in March 2000.

We have had to work hard to beat off competition from other clubs to get him here

Spells at Watford and Charlton followed before Hughes moved to Coventry ahead of the 2004/05 campaign.

In four seasons with the Sky Blues, Hughes made close to 150 appearances but decided to move on this summer.

And Mullen is delighted that he has secured a player who was in demand.

"We have had to work hard to beat off competition from other clubs to get him here," he said.

"He's not done much training for a fortnight since he was on trial with Nottingham Forest but he's come in and played for 45 minutes and he'll do more against West Brom on Tuesday."
