Walsall 2-1 Wigan
Walsall triumphed over Wigan in the battle between the two top teams in the Second Division to earn a place in the LDV Vans Northern Section quarter-finals.

Two goals from teenagers making their debuts gave the Midlands side victory at the Bescott stadium.

Nineteen-year-old striker Gary Birch scored with a magnificent left-foot shot to give the Saddlers the lead after 44 minutes, but within 15 seconds former Walsall defender Diego Padula equalised for Wigan with a shot that went in off the post.

With extra-time looming a Darren Wrack corner was driven home by Ian Gaunt, also 19, from close range.

Both managers fielded virtually their reserve sides because they meet again in a crucial promotion battle in the Second Division at the JJB Stadium on Friday night.

Walsall: Emberson, Barras, Gaunt, Scott, Small, Wrack, Gadsby, Bukran, Wright, Birch, Byfield. Subs: Walker, Hunt, Hawley, Ekelund, Roper.

Wigan: Marriott, Dickson, Balmer, Griffiths, McMahon, Joel Johnson, Redfearn, Nicholls, Padula, Kay, McLoughlin. Subs: Spearritt, Ian Johnson, Ellis, Cunningham.

Referee: A Bates (Stoke on Trent)
