Tranmere Rovers confirm American takeover interest

Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere Rovers have confirmed the club is in talks with an unnamed American company about a possible takeover.

Reports have suggested the interested party may be Club 9 Sports, a Chicago-based investment company previously linked with Sheffield Wednesday.

Chairman Peter Johnson, Tranmere's majority shareholder, is understood to have been seeking a new owner.

In a statement on their website the club said talks with 'an American company' were at a very early stage.

Club 9's interest in acquiring Sheffield Wednesday ended when the then owners turned down an offer they described as 'derisory'.

Tranmere manager Les Parry said he was unaware of any official developments.

"Generally there is no smoke without fire, but I haven't a clue if there is anything going on," Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside.

He added: "We'll just wait and see if anything happens, and if it does, we'll deal with it at the time.

"I've had a chat with my staff and all we can do is keep doing our jobs. If someone else comes in, and it is a big if, we've got to be seen to be doing the best job we can.

"It's pointless worrying about it and we'll just carry on preparing for Saturday and get the lads right."

On the pitch Rovers have had an upturn in fortunes, and their 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday moved Les Parry's side to 15th in the league.

Striker Lucas Akins believes ahead of Saturday's trip to Peterborough his side can beat any team put in front of them.

"We don't want to get carried away but we are looking up and we're not far away from the play-offs," Akins said.
