Barnes hampered by playing career

Former Tranmere Rovers boss John Barnes says his managerial record should not be compared to his playing spell.

The former England and Liverpool winger, sacked by Rovers on 9 October, also flopped as Celtic boss.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I made it clear I wasn't John Barnes the ex-England international with 79 caps, double player of the year at Liverpool.

"I was John Barnes, first-time manager, coming to a club which is not the biggest club in League One," he added.

"We were still a club that had one of the smallest budgets in League One.

"We had an average attendance of 5,500. So forget about John Barnes the player, it's John Barnes the manager who's going to try and do his best.

"A lot of agents and a lot of people felt there was going to be money available and there'll be a lot razzmatazz and it's going to be great."

You can hear the full exclusive interview with John Barnes on BBC Radio Merseyside Sport 95.8 FM, 1485 MW and DAB from 1905 BST on Wednesday, 21 October.
