Tranmere Rovers striker Craig Curran believes he has improved his on-pitch awareness and is now able to make more of an impact in forward positions.
Curran, 18, was praised for his high work-rate last season but was urged by manager Ronnie Moore to use his energy more effectively.
"I need to save myself for when it matters and that's when I have the ball," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"I'm learning every day and it [4-3-3] suits me better than a 4-4-2."
Curran has scored four goals during Tranmere's pre-season campaign and is now hoping to hold down a first-team place in Ronnie Moore's new 4-3-3 formation.
"I'm looking on keeping my head down and working hard.
"I've got to keep performing the way I am, working hard and getting the goals as much as I can."
