Rovers snap up Nicholson
Tranmere have bolstered their defence for the second time this summer with the capture of Sheffield United left-back Shane Nicholson.

The 32-year-old has agreed a two-year deal at Prenton Park after reaching a settlement on the remainder of his contract with the Blades.

"Shane is a good quality left-sided player with lots of experience and will be a great addition to the squad," said Tranmere boss Dave Watson.

"There are very few left-sided players available and to pick one up of Shane's quality will be a big boost to the squad."

Nicholson has started over 400 senior games for Lincoln City, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion, Chesterfield, Stockport and Sheffield United.

He moved to Bramall Lane a year ago, making 21 appearances, plus four as a substitute in Division One last season.

He joins former Huddersfield skipper Kevin Gray in Watson's plans for the new season.

"Division wise it is a step down but hopefully we can get Tranmere back up to Division One where they belong," Nicholson told Tranmere's website.

"I'm very pleased. Obviously there's been a lot of speculation about me leaving Sheffield United during the pre-season and I'm glad to have signed now.

"I'm looking forward to getting a good pre-season under my belt and then having a good season.

"Hopefully things will turn out well and all I want to do is win promotion."
