John Aldridge has resigned as manager of Tranmere Rovers.

The announcement was made on the club's official website after Aldridge saw his side surrender a 2-0 half-time lead before losing 3-2 at home to Barnsley on Saturday.

The collapse leaves Rovers rooted to the foot of the First Division table.

A club statement on the official website read: "Following Tranmere Rovers' defeat at home to Barnsley, the board of directors have accepted the resignation of John Aldridge as manager of the football club."

Away from the pressures of the league, Aldridge's side have produced some cup heroics in recent seasons.

During this campaign alone, they claimed the Premiership scalps of Everton and Southampton in the FA Cup, their 4-3 win over Saints coming after they had trailed 3-0 at half time.

Striker Paul Rideout, who hit a hat-trick in the game, told BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 programme: "It is a very sad day for the club.

Aldridge has enjoyed some thrilling cup wins

"He has done all he can and it was not his fault that we were 2-0 up and threw it away.

"He worked with limited resources and the man has performed miracles.

"He always wore his heart on his sleeve and has done wonderfully well."

Tranmere built up an enviable reputation as spirited cup fighters under Aldridge.

Their dramatic win over Southampton was the sixth Premiership scalp to be claimed by the club in 18 months.

The final straw

In the Worthington Cup, Aldridge took Rovers to Wembley last season, where they were narrowly beaten by Leicester City.

But all their cup heroics counted for nothing as they remained bottom of Division One following the collapse against Barnsley.

That was the final straw for the former Liverpool striker.

He immediately headed for a meeting with Tranmere chairperson Lorraine Rogers, leaving assistant Kevin Sheedy to hold the regular post-match press conference.

Aldridge, who became Tranmere manager in 1996, quickly left the ground and shortly afterwards the club announced it had accepted his resignation.

Sheedy will take charge of the side for the match against Gillingham on Tuesday, assisted by reserve team manager Ray Mathias.
