Defoe can be the best - Redknapp

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists that Jermain Defoe can top the Premier League scoring charts following his superb start to the season.

Defoe is in blistering form with a hat-trick in Tuesday night's 5-1 win at Hull following a brace in England's friendly draw against Holland.

"He's up with the best when he is playing like he is now. He's so sharp - he's lethal," said the Spurs manager.

"He is capable of scoring 20-odd goals and it's about time he did."

Redknapp added: "With Ronaldo gone he can be pushing to be the top scorer.

"He's come back stronger this year and looks even quicker with the power he has built through working with the fitness coaches in the gym."

Redknapp believes that a prolific season should be enough to earn Defoe a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for the 2010 World Cup finals after the 26-year-old missed out in 2006.

He stated: "It's up to the England manager, and it's a long way until the World Cup, but Jermain is the man in form at the moment.

"He's got to play well because Peter Crouch is waiting to get in. He is a player England need badly for the World Cup.

As well as Defoe and Crouch, Redknapp can also call on Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko and insists that all four will have key roles to play in Tottenham's season.

"We've got four top strikers," explained the Spurs boss, ahead of the leaders' Premier League clash with London rivals West Ham on Sunday.

"It's difficult when you have top players like Peter and Roman Pavlyuchenko. They are not used to not playing and I understand that. They will play.

"It is a long season and at times we may change and play three forwards. They give me options."

Defoe, meanwhile, feels that the competition for a regular first-team place, plus his extra pre-season work, has given him a real confidence boost.

"We have got fantastic forwards - and not only the forwards, it is every position," said the striker, who returned from Portsmouth for a second spell at Spurs in January.

"Scoring goals does give you confidence and I just want to keep it going, keep working hard and hopefully I'll get more.

"I'm playing in a good team so I know I'm going to get chances. It's just down to me to take them.

"That keeps you on your toes and when you get an opportunity you've got to take it, otherwise you mightn't be playing the next game."
