Defoe return pleases Spurs fans

Jermaine Defoe
Defoe is expected to rejoin Spurs less than a year after leaving for Pompey

Jermain Defoe will be welcomed back at White Hart Lane with "open arms", says former chairman of Tottenham Supporters Trust, Daniel Wynne.

The Portsmouth striker is expected to complete his transfer back to former club Spurs following a medical.

Wynne told BBC London 94.9: "He's going to get a great reception. He got a great reception from Spurs fans at Portsmouth earlier this season.

"He will absolutely be welcomed back with open arms."

Defoe was signed by Harry Redknapp, who is now Spurs boss but was then in charge of Portsmouth, in January 2008, and has scored 17 goals in 36 appearances for Pompey.

The deal is worth about 15m and Defoe is expected to sign a five-year contract.

Wynne added: "Just putting the money side of it to one side, he's the sort of player that will score goals if he's given a role in the team.

"I guess he was frustrated last time out that he didn't get the sort of run outs that he wanted.

"But every time he did play regularly he was scoring goals for fun and I'm just really looking forward to seeing him back in a Spurs shirt again.

"Jermain Defoe and Tottenham is a marriage made in heaven and Jermain Defoe and Harry Redknapp is another marriage made in heaven.

"Harry Redknapp got the best out of him when he joined Portsmouth last season and I'm sure he'd be able to do exactly the same this season."
