Tottenham have signed Croatia defender Vedran Corluka from Manchester City for 8.5m on a six-year deal.

The 22-year-old defender began his career at Dynamo Zagreb before joining City in 2007 where he made 41 appearances in all competitions.

Corluka, who has won 24 caps for Croatia, said: "I am delighted to be here because I am coming to a big club with great players, great ambition.

"Also my best friend [Luka Modric] is here so it is a very happy day for me."

Corluka had handed in a transfer request at City following previous interest from Tottenham.

His move south follows City's signings of Espanyol defender Pablo Zabaleta, who agreed a five-year deal on Sunday and Brazilian defender Glauber Berti, who signed a one-year contract.

Spurs boss Juande Ramos has continued to overhaul his squad on transfer deadline day by signing Corluka and Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Corluka and friend Modric have followed similar career paths, beginning at Zagreb before loan spells at Inter Zapresic and moves to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham signed Modric from Dynamo Zagreb in April for a fee believed to be 15.8m.

Corluka and Modric are also international team-mates and played key roles in Croatia's run to the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.
