Poyet suffers injury heartache
Gus Poyet in pre-season action for Spurs
Poyet had an outstanding first season at Spurs
Tottenham midfielder Gustavo Poyet could miss up to eight months of the new season after breaking down in training.

The 34-year-old was already expected to miss the first three months of the season with a twisted knee, but had been on the verge of a return to full training after minor surgery.

However, his knee gave way on Tuesday following a strenuous workout the previous day, and he must now decide whether to undergo cruciate ligament surgery.

"I feel so upset and sad after being so happy on Monday and Tuesday mornings," Poyet told London's Evening Standard newspaper.

"On Monday I was jumping backwards and forwards and running freely.

"Then yesterday I was sitting down, with ice on the knee, and as soon as I stretched, a piece of muscle went out of position which sets me back quite a bit.

I'm confident in my powers of recovery
Gus Poyet

"It appears that during the last few months I may have suffered cruciate ligament damage but the knee has been strong enough to support me.

"Now I've had these added problems, it may be time to undergo the full surgery and put things right but it is a big decision.

"I'll speak to Glenn to choose the next move."

Poyet had cruciate ligament surgery on his other knee while at previous club Chelsea.

He said: "I'm confident in my powers of recovery but before I can start to recuperate the operation has to go well."

Poyet's injury is another blow for manager Glenn Hoddle who is already without Christian Ziege, Darren Anderton and Ledley King.
